The pedestrianised commercial heart of Basildon — Eastgate Shopping Centre, the market, Towngate Theatre and St Martin's Square.
Basildon town centre is the commercial heart of the borough, built from the 1950s onwards as part of the post-war New Town programme. It is centred on a large pedestrianised shopping precinct anchored by the Eastgate Shopping Centre — one of the biggest covered malls in Essex — together with St Martin's Square, Town Square, and the surrounding market and high-street parades.
The town centre is home to the Towngate Theatre on St Martin's Square, the borough's main arts venue, and to a number of pieces of public art from the New Town era, including the well-known Mother and Child fountain in Town Square. The Basildon Centre houses the borough council's main offices and customer services.
Basildon railway station, on the c2c line, sits on the southern edge of the centre and runs direct trains to London Fenchurch Street. The town centre is the focus of ongoing regeneration proposals aimed at bringing new homes, leisure and public realm improvements to the core of the New Town.
