High ground on the edge of Basildon — Langdon Hills Country Park, the Essex Wildlife Trust nature reserve, and far-reaching estuary views.
Langdon Hills sits on high ground on the south-western edge of Basildon, near Laindon. It is best known for Langdon Hills Country Park and the adjoining Langdon Nature Reserve, managed by the Essex Wildlife Trust, which together protect ancient woodland, meadows and some of the finest views in south Essex — on a clear day you can see across the Thames estuary into Kent.
The nature reserve includes the Plotlands area and the Plotlands Museum, preserving the history of the self-built plotland homes that once covered these hills. There are waymarked trails, a visitor centre and rich wildlife including bluebell woods in spring.
The residential parts of Langdon Hills are largely made up of established housing along High Road and the surrounding lanes, giving the area a greener, more suburban feel than the New Town core.
